Following the money: how stolen funds reach exchanges

Stolen crypto rarely sits still. Within minutes of an exploit, the funds typically hop through a chain of fresh wallets — each transfer an attempt to put distance between the theft and the cash-out. The trail then usually leads into a mixer, where deposits from many sources are pooled to break the direct link between input and output.

But a mixer is not the end of the story. To turn tokens into money, the funds have to surface again — most often at an exchange deposit address. That is where timing, amounts, and on-chain heuristics can reconnect the dots, and where a freeze request can still catch the funds before they are gone.
